SHORT STORY REVIEW: THE CELESTIAL ASSIGNMENT by Theresa Braun

After being murdered by one of his “side pieces”, Will finds himself in the afterlife and is tasked with being the guardian angel to a baby girl.

To be honest, I had expected this to be a horror or a thriller, and it wasn’t either, but it was a surprisingly fun short story about the least qualified guardian angel—possibly ever. Will is a grade A douche, the quintessential fuckboy, even after death. Braun does a fantastic job at making him appropriately unlikeable, yet incredibly engaging without being sympathetic to his awful ways. The idea that your guardian angel may not be a supreme enlightened being, but someone flawed being on the path to redemption is an unexpected one that I enjoyed immensely. Like my good pal Steve said, “If you’re not reading Theresa Braun, it’s time to change that” I’m certainly glad I did, and can’t wait to read more.
