BOOK REVIEW: THOSE WHO GO FORTH INTO THE EMPTY PLACE OF THE GODS by Curtis Lawson and Doug Rinaldi

A game show contestant answers a trivia question with a piece of forbidden knowledge that sets a series of cosmic horrors in motion.

This little slice of cosmic horror was one fast, fun way to spend an afternoon! I think we all met a Brewster at some point in our lives (and it pains me to say, but I've been a Brewster at times) he's a bit of an insufferable know it all. Which in personal situations is unbearable, but if you happen to find yourself on a game show on the track to win a cash prize, it's certainly not the worst thing, that is until Brewster unwittingly answers one question with a piece of arcane knowledge not meant to be spoken.

There's a secret group of ancient guardians, a crazed grandfather risen from the dead to end the world, and hapless Brewster in the middle of it all--and I wanted so much more. I'm of the opinion that almost all novels would be improved if they were cut down to novella length, but this is one of the rare occasions that I wish a novella had been stretched out to a big heftyou novel. The glimpses of the world that Lawson and Rinaldi give us fascinated me and I wanted to know everything about it, and the Order of the Nine Lunar Mansions. I certainly appreciated the fast pace, and it kept me reading at a breakneck pace, but unfortunately things ended up glossed (or entirely skipped) over. Perhaps there was a length limit they were working under, or maybe they felt best not to bog down the pace with extraneous exposition and what not, and normally I'd be all for that,  but dammit, they went and got me ten different kinds of intrigued and now I want to know everything!

So overall, I do really wish more had been expanded on and the story had a bit more breathing room, but I'm not actually mad about it. I was interested and invested enough to actually want more, which is really something, and regardless of it I still had a good time escaping into this one.
